HellBlade: Senua’s Sacrifice

HellBlade: Senua’s Sacrifice is about a Celtic woman with psychosis. Although it is not direct said within the game, there are clear indications, her symptoms being hallucinations, delusional actions and belief that she is “on a quest.” It was also mentioned that her mother experienced similar symptoms. As this story takes place in the far past, many people didn’t understand what psychosis was. Senua’s father called it the darkness, and burned Senua’s mother at the stake for it. Her father decided to take a different approach on his daughter, by locking her away at home, never to come out. Of course, she rebelled and sneaked out. As she went out she saw a boy named Duncan, who she later fell in love with.

The love doesn’t last as the village where Senua lived was struck by a raid from the Northmen, meaning vikings. Duncan died and was hung. Being unable to bear the stress she went mad and sought to resurrect him. By traveling to the north and seeking out Hela, Godess of the underworld and the dead. As she fights her way through Hela’s domain, Hellhiem she learns to manage her psychosis and deal with her hallucinations. She accepts Duncan’s death at the end and overcomes her psychosis completely. They’ve recently just announced a part 2 so I’m excited to see what happens!
