We Happy Few is an amazing game about what happens to a country when they are in denial. The game takes place in alternate reality Britain after World War 2. In the alternate reality, children were sent away to Germany in order to make peace with during the war, however these children didn’t come back. After the war, many people were left depressed and unmotivated, in response to this the government began distributing antidepressants called “joy” and urged people to not talk about the war, women were also sterilized because children would ask too many questions. A new society rose from the ashes of another, censoring material was now a job in high demand, denial became the culture of Britain. There were however flaws within this new society, some people we’re unable to digest Joy and were cast out to the outskirts of the isles, war veterans, affected by PTSD were left untreated in order to ensure that no information of the war was leaked.
In the game, you play as three main characters, all who are anomalies within the new society. The first is Arthur, a journalist who begins to remember his brother who was sent to Germany and sets out to find him. The second is Sally, a chemist that managed to bare a child after escaping the sterilization facility, and plans to run away with her child. Lastly Ollie, a war veteran suffering with PTSD, he discovers that the food supply is running out and that chaos will soon ensue all over Britain, and he intends to share that information with everyone. Overall, this is an amazing game that can explain the issues of denial, the horrors of war, and what life could’ve been.
